Is Professional Organizing the Right Career for You?
When I began my professional organizing career over 15 years ago I had no idea what I was in for! Of course, I had a passion for organizing. But, I quickly learned that having a passion for organizing is only the first step. What I didn’t realize is that organizing my own space was very different from helping others organize their stuff, spaces and lives.
Not to mention I had to be a business owner too! I never knew just how much I needed to know to run a business. Believe it or not, even after 15 years, I’m still learning! Being a business owner is more than just printing a business card or putting up a website. You need to handle administration, bookkeeping and of course, marketing, marketing and more marketing! I’m always marketing!
I also realized that to be a good organizer, you need to be a compassionate, sensitive, and patient people-person. We get into the depths of people’s lives. We hear and handle very personal information. I learned that the organizing process often involves dealing with what’s in your client’s head in addition to what’s in their space. You are part-organizer, part-therapist, and if the image here is any indication, a handyman too!

I think anyone starting a business of any kind would benefit from this post. Every idea seems great until you jump in and realize how much effort goes into starting a business. Having a professional guide you through the pitfalls is invaluable.
Great points, Sarah! I’ve seen so many organizers – and other small business owners – fall by the wayside, many because they just didn’t realize there’s more to running a business than a love for the work.
Just learned about your wonderful website via Janet Barclay! What a treasure of information for professional organizers!!
