Organizing Policies and Procedures
Organizing policies and procedures are essential for every organizing business. Â These ensure that everyone has the information and instructions that they need in order to do what they are supposed to be doing. You need to have organizing policies and procedures in place for your business, your staff and your clients.
As professional organizers, we are business owners, too. We need to always consider business side of this industry – not just the organizing. Doing so will help to avoid costly trial and error.
So, how will organizing policies and procedures help your business? First of all, no one can read your mind. You may have it all figured out in YOUR head, but your employees or clients don’t necessarily know what you know. Writing out your expectations will help avoid miscommunication and frustration – on both ends. Organizing policies and procedures also help you maintain consistency. As your staff and client numbers increase, it gets more and more difficult to remember who knows what. You usually don’t remember to tell someone something until an error has occurred. Policies and procedures also help you maintain control of your business and what happens when you’re not there. You can’t be everywhere at once, after all. You also want to have organizing policies and procedures in place to cover you in case any legal or other issues arise.
So, what do you include in your organizing policies and procedures?
- In short, anything you want people to know or do
- Anything that will:
- Eliminate confusion
- Get the job done (better, faster or just done)
- Make the job easier
- Make the job safer
- Reduce issues, errors and frustration
In order to create effective organizing policies and procedures, you’ll first need to determine what is important to your business, your customers and your staff members. Make a list and get input from your customers and staff. It also helps to think back to any issues you’ve had in the past. Perhaps they could have been avoided if a policy or procedure was in place. Write these down and then create your organizing policies and procedures from there. Remember that organizing polices and procedures must be written and provided to everyone in order to do any good!

So nice of you to share this information. Clear and up front communication avoids so many unnecessary hassles!
Excellent advice! Especially about having the policies in place to help you maintain control for your business when you aren’t there. Having a good working agreement can also save you from having to answer a ton of questions and helps you give a consistent answer each time.
There’s a lot to be said for standardization. Why re-invent the wheel? That’s what policies and procedures offer you as a business owner. How do you implement then? Having a template makes all the difference.
